FAQs

Although commonly referred to as perspex, Perspex® is in fact a manufacturer’s brand name. Acrylic and Perspex® are one and the same thing. Other common brands available in the UK are Plexiglas, Policril, Acryglas and Acrycast.

Acrylic is a light and strong plastic that is available in a range of colours and finishes. Polycarbonate is heavier and scratches easily, but is virtually indestructible.

Acrylic makes a great splash back and comes in various colours or you can paint clear acrylic to achieve any colour you desire. However, we don't recommend using acrylic behind a cooker as it is a potential fire risk. We recommend aluminum composite instead. Please contact us if you have any further questions about this.

This will depend on colour, but in general we recommend 5mm acrylic for use as a splashback as any adhesive used can be slightly visible through some colours in 3mm.

Acrylic sheets transmit more light than glass. 92% verses 80-90%. This may not sound like much of a difference, but it is worth considering especially when completing projects for inside spaces. It is also worth bearing in mind when you require thicker panels e.g. bullet proof glass appears milky whereas the same thickness of acrylic does not.

When an acrylic sheet is cut to size, the saw blade produces a matte finish on the edges of the panel. To give the edges to a smooth and glossy finish we use a diamond polisher.

1. Use a hairdryer to blow away any dust and loose dirt from the surface of the acrylic, or alternatively use a soft cloth to wipe it away.

2. Squirt a little washing up liquid into lukewarm water and use the solution to clean the surface of more resistant dirt and grime.

3. Next use clean water without any washing up liquid in it to rinse the surface.

4. To prevent water marks, blot dry with a microfibre cloth.

There are also various acrylic cleaners and polishers available which we can provide that keep acrylic looking like brand new.
